Welcome to the Macquarie 2012 Access Worlds

Angus MacGregor at RutlandHosted by Middle Harbour Yacht Club, and supported by Australian Access Class Association, we in Australia are very excited about staging of the Access Class 2012 Combined World and International Championships. The regatta will also incorporate the 2012 Australian Access Class Championships. The event is expected to attract over 120 sailors from 12 countries.

Holding these championships in Australia is extremely important to both our Australian athletes and community. The special feature of this regatta will be that while 80 % of the sailors will have some form of disability, the competition is open to all. This aspect of “inclusion” is strongly supported by those with disabilities, making this one of the few sporting opportunities where athletes with a disability compete on equal terms with and against able bodied athletes.

Over recent years, the class has gained a strong following in Australia, aided by support provided by the Sailability Organisation of Australia in association with local sailing clubs around the country. MHYC has been active in this program, partnering with a local Rotary group, providing volunteers, support and the resources necessary.

The 2010 series was held in the UK, with some 10 nations competing. Australia had a very strong representation at this regatta and currently ranks in the top 3 nations in terms of both participation and results.

Come and join in to make this the “Best Access Regatta Ever”.
